Go for the Broad Prize!
As one indication of aiming high, SMHC has encouraged all urban districts to “go for the Broad Prize” in Urban Education. The Broad Prize is the “Super Bowl” of urban education accomplishment; it recognizes the urban district that has made the most progress in boosting student achievement and reducing the achievement gap. All previous Broad Prize winners have had not only a powerful education improvement strategy that drove their improved student achievement results, but also a comprehensive strategy for recruiting, developing, rewarding and retaining top teacher and principal talent, the prime foci of SMHC.
On Thursday, April 2, the five finalists for the 2009 Broad Prize for Urban Education, the largest education prize in the country, will be announced on www.broadprize.org. Each year, 100 of the largest urban school districts nationwide are automatically eligible for the Broad Prize. A review board selects five finalists based on publicly available student performance data. Districts cannot apply for or be nominated for this award.
This is a recognition to which all urban districts should strive. The districts nominated and the ones that win the prize have strategies that other districts should emulate and put in place in their education systems.
