You’ll notice that this Web site looks a little different than the sites of other education organizations. We’ve designed this specifically to frequently post new content and gather feedback from you to help drive the conversation about what Strategic Management of Human Capital (SMHC) is all about. We have a “Resources” page where we will be posting research and background pieces on issues related to recruiting, developing, rewarding and retaining talent. But we also will be posting on our blog on a daily and weekly basis other reports from our Task Force members, as well as relevant news and Web content. All the resources on our site are geared towards encouraging real action locally. We will provide the tools local leaders need to make necessary changes in school district polices and procedures.

We invite you to come back to the site on a regular basis to find the latest education news, particularly as it pertains to talent management issues. We also welcome your comments and links to items you think would be of interest to our SMHC audience. We want this to be a one-stop-shop for education talent and human capital management issues, but we need your continuous feedback to do so.

We are SMHC’s co-directors: Allan Odden, director of the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) and professor of educational leadership and policy analysis at University of Wisconsin, and Jim Kelly, founding president of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

We are launching this movement to help local school districts revamp their human resources systems and talent management practices by putting into place effective SMHC concepts. SMHC’s overall goal is to dramatically improve student achievement, focusing on the countries largest urban districts. SMHC includes practices to recruit, develop, reward and retain top talent in schools. These actions require hard work, strong performance management and broad political support as they seek to fundamentally change deep-seated practices of large district bureaucracies. This Web site will be your source for finding out more about how to put these practices into place.

In addition to the Web site, SMHC will spread these ideas through a national Task Force, an Annual Conference, case studies and research, and a National SMHC Reform Network. The Task Force, a key part of our work, is chaired by Governor Tim Pawlenty from Minnesota (R), with Michelle Rhee, chancellor of District of Columbia Public Schools; Carl Cohn, former superintendent of San Diego Unified Schools and Long Beach Public Schools, California; and Sir Michael Barber, partner at McKinsey and Company and former chief advisor on delivery to the British Prime Minister Tony Blair, as vice-chairs. The Task Force comprises close to 30 school and community leaders who will share expertise and extend these ideas locally.
