SMHC’s Core Resources

What is SMHC?: Jim Kelly and Allan Odden provide this paper to walk one through the main tenets of the strategic management of human capital concept and how it relates to education.  This is the organization’s defining document. In some publications, this paper is referenced as “Strategic Management of Human Capital in Public Education.” A summary of “What is SMHC?” is also available.

Talent in Education: The Essence of the Strategic Management of Human Capital (SMHC): This paper provides a brief overview of the main tenets of SMHC. It discusses SMHC’s action networks and primary resources, as well as the core ideas of the Talent in Education project.

SMHC in 2008 and Plans for 2009:  This paper provides the action items designed to move the work of SMHC forward.  They include plans to define, document, explain, mobilize and promote the main tenants behind SMHC.  The drivers to this action include the Task Force, interactive Web site, Annual Conference, SMHC District Reform Network, SMHC State Reform Network and Case Study Project.

Strategic Talent Management: Lessons from the Corporate World: Edward E. Lawler, SMHC Task Force member and director of the Center for Effective Organizations at the University of Southern California authored this paper, which shares research from the private sector.  There is much to be learned from the corporate world that can be applied to the way school human resources and talent management structures are developed and run.
